Radical Islam threatens our way of life

The aftermath of 9/11 is getting clearer and clearer as time passes. The Western world is no longer the same it was before the tragedy occurred.

As we are speaking, a war is taking place between two different ways of life. On the one hand, there is the open liberal democracy which is the culmination of the Western Civilization's achievements. On the other hand, radical Islam demands submission and the total annihilation of Western values.

It is our firm belief, that radical Islam poses an unprecedented threat to the hearts of Western societies. Violence has been brought in our cities and on our streets, and there is no reason to assume that the attacks won't escalate as the West remains inefficient in addressing the problem.

Suicide attacks in crowded places or other kinds of attacks, including the use of nuclear weapons, pose a threat to our way of life. The fact that radical Islam is something that transcends the idea of a traditional country makes it very difficult to address the threat.

However difficult it might be, it is not impossible. The intelligence services of all Western nations are on alert, and lot's of work is done to protect our countries. But this is not enough.

The West seems unable to engage in a productive dialog with Islam and help so that moderate Islam spreads and prevail on the ideological level over radical Islam.

The few steps that have been undertaken were inefficient and even led to more uproar. The Pope's speech at Regensburg, for example, wasn't well received at all. It is imperative that a well-planned approach is used, so that the Muslim world adopts a positive view of the West.

Even strategic decisions, such as the deployment of more US troops in Afghanistan, need to be reconsidered, and incorporated in a wider plan. Old enemies like the Taleban could become allies against Al-Qaeda, were the necessary concessions to be made.

Unfortunately, as the current economic crisis shows, there is lack of leadership in Europe. And redefining the Muslim world's outlook of the West and eradicating terrorism need coordinated efforts.

Thankfully, the war hasn't escalated yet. But can anyone seriously predict how long it will be since that happens?
